Personal Story: Mental Health Awareness Month

By Stephanie Roth

Hello Friends,

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

I have struggled with a mental health condition since I was in high school. I have had many great days where I can fully function, and my depression feels almost nonexistent. I have had other days where I feel so depressed, like I’m in a deep, dark hole, and no matter how hard I try to climb out, I just keep falling back in. My anxiety will be so high, constantly worrying about saying or doing something to embarrass myself. The struggle is real, and a constant fight. Life is full of ups and downs and twists and turns for everyone, and with a mental health condition, everything seems magnified.

Please know that there are resources if you are having a difficult time. You are not alone!

If you are concerned about someone else in your life, in my experience, simply asking, “Are you doing okay?” or “Do you want to talk?” gives them the opportunity to open up to you, which might be exactly what they need. Everyone deserves kindness! If you or someone you know is having a mental health crisis, you can call or text 988 to speak with someone.

In addition to 988, NAMI is another resource that has made a big difference in my life. There are so many wonderful educational groups and support groups, along with advocacy initiatives. I remember years ago being in the hospital for my mental health. Two volunteers from NAMI came to speak about their experiences. One of the volunteers lived with a mental health condition and the second person lived in support of someone with a mental health condition. They spoke about what NAMI offers, and almost immediately I decided to sign up for the Peer-To-Peer educational course. I learned very valuable information and a lot of helpful coping skills. Most importantly, I learned that I wasn’t alone. After taking the 8-week course, I decided to volunteer because of how much respect I have for the agency and how much I appreciate all that they do. I have been a volunteer with NAMI in Washtenaw County since May of 2021 and was hired as an Outreach Coordinator in June of 2023. NAMI gives me the opportunity to spread awareness, advocate for mental health and not only help others, but it is helpful to me as well.

Awareness is the first step toward change. Let’s spread awareness and together we can break the stigma!

Stephanie, having a mental health condition herself, understands the stigma and wants to help break that. Going to outreach events and giving out valuable information, along with talking with others, reminds her that she is making a difference. She uses her personal experiences to help others.
