Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy Walz

By: Cristina Neil

In the world of mental health support and advocacy, Kathy Walz stands out as a prime example of commitment and passion within the NAMI Washtenaw County community.

Kathy embarked on her NAMI journey when her youngest son struggled with an anxiety disorder. He then became an active Peer-to-Peer program facilitator. One of the first programs they presented as a mother/son duo was alongside another long-time NAMI advocate, Bob Nassauer, with the ‘Parents and Teachers as Allies’ for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. Inspired by the support she received, Kathy felt compelled to share her experiences and knowledge, aiming to train others on fostering supportive mental health services within school settings.

Currently, Kathy plays a crucial role as a facilitator for the monthly Friends and Family support group in Washtenaw County. This NAMI program is for adults who have a friend or family member with a mental health condition. The meetings typically revolve around topics of people caring for others and themselves.

As a seasoned Social Worker and Behavioral Health Navigator for the Community Health Improvement department of Chelsea Hospital, Kathy recognized the need for family support in the inpatient unit. Collaborating with NAMI WC, she formed a relationship with Chelsea Hospital and the hospital offered space to provide NAMI programming.

When asked about her community connection and dreams for the future, Kathy said, “I’ve enjoyed working with like-minded individuals who share a passion for helping those who often feel isolated.” Her experience as a NAMI WC community member provided her with admiration for the hard work and dedication of fellow community members in the fight against mental health stigma. Looking ahead, Kathy dreams of expanded programming and increased accessibility, acknowledging the difficulty caregivers face in finding time for participation.

In addressing other members of the NAMI WC community, Kathy notes that she is grateful for their collective efforts. “Thank you for all that you do. Let’s keep doing the great work–one program at a time!”

NAMI Washtenaw County celebrates the dedication of community members like Kathy Walz, united in the mission to break down barriers and deepen mental health conversations.

Cristina graduated from Eastern Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in communication and social work. She is interested in supporting under-served youth, social justice, and helping those in need. She is involved in many non-profits that are linked to those subjects. At NAMI, she is a volunteer with the overview committee, provides graphic design services, and supports community events.
